December Already ?!

Shocked that 2008 is almost over and the rush has begun as Christmas gets closer, working at a jewellers in a popular mall in Cape Town equals the definite Xmas madness that accompanies retail!

All of us at Marios Jewellers are confidant despite the global economic climate that this year’s season will be a fantastic one, designs have poured in as the wedding season has begun!
So yes, they are keeping me busy indeed and I must admit I’m excited for December to arrive so that I may have my first experience of retail during Christmas!

Despite work, my degree work has been keeping me occupied after hours. Writing my thesis and gathering my research and findings has proved to be quiet entertaining as I have stumbled onto a few gems in the world of jewellery!

Thank God for the internet, that’s all I can say!

Wanting to share a couple of great finds I ran across through my research, I have narrowed down a couple of jewellery artists that are definitely worth taking time out to have a look at, all happen to be super talented female jewellers:

Mah Rana, is a London based jeweller who explores subjects within her work such as jewellery’s role within a persons life and the attachments we form to our jewellery. Her work has provided me with much needed inspiration at time and guidance with the way in which she executes her work.

Julia De Ville, a power house creative in my eyes! Her work will astound anyone I am sure! I don’t want to say much as I think the visuals speak for them selves!

Finally before I go on a bit too much, the last lady is Melanie Bilenker, her work is highly unusual … she creates 3D images by setting pieces of her own hair in resin.

She draws inspiration mainly from moments of her daily life, capturing mundane moments and transforming them into an these precious objects!

Oh my goodness – hair in resin! How did she come up with that? It’s absolutely brilliant – and beautiful! I can’t imagine how much time that must take…

I know, its unbelievable really…what gets me is how she can get that perspective right…with hair! Think it must take her forever … :)

Hmmm… She must have straight hair. Curly hair sounds like a nightmare to work with! It would make me cry.
I wonder if she has little jars all around her house to put stray hairs in as soon as they fall out…
